La Poste revives war with banks

2 articles:
1. The French post office, La Poste, has decided to bring in
restrictive measures for its service in the area of the
transportation of valuable items, including money. The banks have
been irritated by what they see as an abrupt and unreasonable
change.
The post office has decided to restrict the value carried at any one
time to FFr4,000, and clients must make a declaration to the effect
that they will not exceed this amount. They must also indicate the
nature of the object carried, and no more than FFr200,000 must be
transported for any one client as part of any one operation.

2. The French post office (La Poste) has announced plans to limit the amount of bank notes transferred by any one of its branches to FFr200,000 (30,490 euros). Beyond this sum, La Poste would be required by law to use a armoured van to transport its funds.

La Poste sent a circular to this effect to French banks at the end of July, as hold-ups continued to rise. The measure, which comes into effect on 6 September, has taken the banks by surprise. They claim to be “shocked” by both the letter and the spirit of the circular, in view of La Poste’s “public service” role.
