Pedal power for Internet courier
Pedal power for Internet courier
Following our report on a delivery service using only environment-friendly electric vans (e.logistics Magazine, last issue), we now bring you StreetBike.net, which combines pedal power with the reach of the Internet.
The Soho-based operation relies on the Internet for taking orders, and claims to be able to offer a 20-minute pickup time throughout London. Booking requests are passed to riders using a combination of voice and SMS messaging on the Orange network a mix which the company claims is a first for any courier company in London. Online tracking of parcels is also offered, since couriers are required to call in or “text” in at every stage of their journey.
Neil Stanton, the founder and executive chairman, reckons his cyclists can carry the same weight as a small van, “and still deliver on time and without compromise.” They are using custom-built “glow in the dark” Pashley bicycles to deliver goods, supported by a single powered rescue vehicle a Smart car named “Carter”.
·StreetBike seems to have appreciated the appeal of having an attractive Web site. Its online game, SB RaceTrix, might help you waste a few entertaining minutes over a lunchtime sandwich.
