TNT aims for leadership position

TNT AIMS FOR LEADERSHIP POSITION

By Yu Wui Wui

TNT Express is aiming to be the market leader for express, mail and logistic markets in Asia by the year 2005. According to Eric Chong, the national sales and marketing director of TNT Malaysia, the company is projecting a four-fold growth to achieve the aim. This projection is also included for Malaysia.

Speaking to Business Computing last week, Chong discusses two strategies the company has put in place to be the market leader. Firstly, the company is looking at using technology to drive the market. He adds that the company will continue to improve customer communications with the company, and systems development within the company.

Secondly, TNT also hopes to expand their market reach through merger and acquisition. “We are interested in companies that can value add to our solutions,” says Chong.

He reveals that in the region, TNT is already actively looking for such companies, and in Malaysia the company is looking at a few companies for this purpose.

However, he adds that their strategies in merger and acquisitions will not include buying companies of similar business nature. Last year, TNT’s revenue reflects 20 per cent growth over 1999.

This year, Chong says that TNT Malaysia is expecting positive growth.

“We are monitoring the current market situation carefully, but as a company, we are ahead of budget during the recent half-year review,” he states. He names close competitors as DHL, Federal Express and UPS.

Last month, TNT launched its personal digital assistant (PDA) tracking service. Offered at no charge to its customers, the solution allows customers to track shipment, check the price of delivery, request for pick up service, and read the latest news on TNT. PDA users can dial in to the Internet and go to TNT’s Web site and request for the services. However, this service is currently available for international shipments only.

According to Chong, this service will be available for domestic shipment within Malaysia next year. Besides tracking via PDA, TNT has already offered tracking services through other means such as Web site, call centres and mobile phones.

“We offer the PDA tracking solution due to customer demand for a more convenient and useful way of tracking their shipment and request for a pick up service,” says Chong. Copyright 2001 The New Straits Times Press (Malaysia) Berhad. Source: World Reporter (Trade Mark) – Asia Intelligence Wire.
