DHL exports to Germany increase by 20% in 2001
AEROSPACE exports have helped parcel carrier DHL Worldwide Express keep up business momentum at East Midlands Airport.
Despite the air travel industry slump and the 1,900 job losses at Rolls-Royce in Derby, DHL said aerospace is among the region¹s top three growing export industries.
The others are transport services and heavy engineering, DHL said.
The parcel carrier has built a huge £30m cargo hub at the airport in Castle Donington.
It plans gradually to move its UK customer services operation, currently based in Hounslow, to a single location at East Midlands Airport.
DHL East Midlands sales manager Tony Kells said: ³Despite the international trading environment becoming increasingly tough during 2001, some industries are increasing export orders.
³Exporters have faced many obstacles this year, not least the impact of the events of September 11.
³It¹s been a difficult 12 months, but it¹s clear East Midlands exporters are aiming to keep order books full.²
DHL said Germany was the area¹s fastest growing export market in 2001.
The international express carrier saw a 20 per cent rise in shipments to the country in the past 12 months.
Other growing export markets for East Midlands exporters were Hong Kong, Spain and Italy.
