Industry post march

A national march and demonstration is to be held to warn the public of the dangers to the postal service of increased competition.

The Communication Workers Union will hold the protest in London on March 16 as part of a campaign to persuade the industry’s regulator to pull back from plans to open up the market to rival firms.

The union will also meet MPs this week to warn that many “unique features” such as door-to-door deliveries at a uniform tariff were under threat.

Meanwhile the union has written to newspaper, TV and radio editors urging support for its campaign to stop calling the Post Office by the “silly name” of Consignia.

“We think a sensible way to refer to the Post Office might be … well, the Post Office,” wrote general secretary Billy Hayes.

“Apart from the sheer awfulness of the trendy new name and the fact that no one knows what you are talking about, there is a serious point.

“Consignia has failed as a name and a business.

“Its hobby is buying up overseas parcels firms and its ethos is a profit-centred competition-ridden low-wage outfit in constant crisis.”
