DHL Resumes Construction of U.S. Air Hub

DHL Worldwide Express, an international air express industry leader, today announced “the resumption of construction on its new U.S. hub project. DHL has operated out of the Greater Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport since 1983 and selected the site for its expanded facility due for completion June 30, 2003. The hub serves as the U.S. region’s overnight package sorting operation for domestic and international DHL shipments. The new hub will be the largest in the DHL global network and one of the most sophisticated sorting centers of its kind in the world. Steve White, Vice President Hub and Gateway Operations, DHL Worldwide Express said, ‘DHL is working according to plan. Following a one year project break, construction on the expanded hub is well under way.’ Total project expenditures for the facility are over $200 million. The facility will double current package-handling capacity of 1.28 million pounds per night to approximately 2.5 million pounds. Noted White, ‘The greatly increased facility provides DHL with the infrastructure to support growth and new service offerings in the future.’ The hub will feature automated sort and track systems for handling increased capacities with speed and efficiency. The DHL network employs over 2,000 people at the hub and within the vicinity of the Greater Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport.” (Source: DHL/Business Wire)
