SingPost's courier system fully wireless
SINGAPORE Post has fully implemented homegrown NewsPage’s wireless Tracks solution in its island-wide courier package operations, making it one of the first postal agencies in the Asia-Pacific to deploy a wireless courier system.
Tracks allows information on the latest job status, collection and delivery to be updated into the backend system, said SingPost. The real-time information enables SingPost’s customers to trace their packages via the Internet, allowing SingPost to take prompt action to resolve problems.
With immediate effect, every SingPost courier will carry a handheld unit which he uses to acknowledge or reject jobs assigned to him wirelessly via the central server.
Once a job is completed, he can use the same device – in-built with laser barcode scanner and DataTAC modem – to capture recipient’s signature and payment information. These information updates the central database wirelessly and is also made available on the Internet. Over 200 such handhelds are now in use by SingPost.
NewsPage Pte Ltd, a mobile and wireless applications provider, took within eight months to integrate its Tracks solution into SingPost’s operations.
‘SingPost is our first client to fully implement our Tracks system into its operations,’ said NewsPage’s general manager for business development, Wendy Lim.
The full Tracks system includes both software and hardware solutions. Although NewsPage is primarily a software solution provider, it also works closely with hardware manufacturers on certain product specifications. One of its hardware partners is Fujitsu who manufactures those handheld devices used by SingPost.
The Tracks system was developed in Singapore four years ago. It is targeted at the courier, logistics, warehousing and transportation companies.
To date, it already boasts of global clients like DHL International, TNT Post Group, Daikin and Fuji Xerox.
