Maersk Logistics masters Collaborative Logistics services and synergies

I would like to cast a spotlight on Maersk Logistics latest strategic synergies that have risen from acquisition and strategic client partnerships. Maersk Logistics has become the masters of holistic logistics practices. Let’s examine their moves… (4/15/2002)

Maersk Logistics is part of the A.P. Moller Group and a sister company to Maersk Sealand. Maersk Logistics employs about 4,300 people in over 200 offices in more than 70 countries. They offer customized solutions for integrated supply chain management, warehousing and distribution, ocean services, airfreight transport, and customs house brokerage services. Their service portfolio includes an extensive range of value adding logistics services at both origin and destination completing the logistics cycle.

Maersk Logistics systems capabilities, teamed with their knowledge capital, meet the current needs and future challenges of the logistics industry. This is evident with IBM Corporation entering into a three-year contract engaging Maersk Logistics to provide ocean freight forwarding services for the IBM Corporation.

What is lucid about Maersk Logistics is the fact that they remain entirely focused on the demands of their clients and are speaking to each of them about the plans for successfully integrating the businesses, and the immediate benefits they can expect.

Furthermore, Maersk Logistics has recently been named ‘Logistics Vendor of the Year’ by the American based Brooks Sports. Maersk Logistics has been handling Brooks Sports’ supply chain for the past two years. Brooks Sports recognizes how Maersk Logistics has professionally co-coordinated and executed a variety of activities with other transport providers with a high level of experience and focused attention to Brooks Sports’ business.

Ms. Pat Scidmore, Director of Supply Chain Logistics at Brooks Sports specifically recognizes the Maersk Logistics staff in the USA Pacific Northwest, as well as the Asia origin locations for their “superior performance in service delivery, but even more important to Brooks Sports is Maersk Logistics’ quick and flexible responsiveness to change.” This is what logistics businesses must achieve; a vote of confidence, not only for their services, but also for their committed employees.

In terms of global synergies Maersk Logistics acquired certain activities of the major global logistics company Distribution Services Limited (DSL) in October 2001. Basically this has positioned Maersk Logistics to address the full spectrum of its clients’ needs. As well as solidifying Maersk Logistics’ position in the global market place, the acquisition has significantly increased the company’s cargo volumes from Asia Pacific to North America in the supply chain management segment, made the company a leading player in transload and warehouse operations in North America and a significant player in the ocean transport intermediary activities segment.

This kind of acquisition has enabled Maersk Logistics to consolidate their market position and increased their capability to deliver a broader logistics service package to existing and potential clients. The acquisition of DSL along with the knowledge and professionalism from a number of other acquisitions made by Maersk Logistics last year, will deliver a higher level of expertise in integrated logistics management as well as a wider logistics service package.

Companies must focus on a profitably growth strategy; this involves organic growth through widening expertise in integrated logistics management and acquisitions in a fragmented marketplace.
