FedEx Express expands award-winning SenseAware service in Europe

FedEx Express has expanded its award-winning shipment monitoring service, SenseAware, to 14 new countries across Europe and Canada. First launched back in 2010 for US healthcare industry customers, SenseAware uses a multi-sensor device to provide almost real-time visibility on shipments including valuable and temperature-sensitive items, with an online application for customers to access data.

The service uses a GPS-enabled SenseAware sensor device that provides in-transit readings on aspects like temperature, humidity, shock, pressure, location and whether a shipment has been opened or exposed to the light.

SenseAware can support dry ice technology keeping shipments between minus 80 degrees centigrade and plus 60 degrees, or a cryogenic probe monitoring items down to minus 195 degrees centigrade.

The service won two prestigious World Mail Awards in 2012 in the Innovation and Security categories.

Following an expansion into Canada, the UK, Australia and Singapore in late 2012, FedEx Express said yesterday that it is now launching in more countries within Europe, as well as providing expanded capabilities in Canada.

The service is being introduced in Belgium, Italy, France, Spain, Switzerland, Netherlands, Ireland, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Czech Republic, Poland and Germany.

Carlo Novi, the managing director for sales at FedEx Express EMEA HealthCare Solutions, said growing complexity of national and international healthcare regulations was leading to logistical challenges hitting every level of the delivery chain.

He said SenseAware can help organisations overcome these challenges and gain critical information on their shipments and supply chains.

“Thanks to our international expansion program, even more healthcare customers have access to this information, providing insight to make better, timelier decisions and help identify opportunities to increase the efficacy of their supply chains,” he said.

Alongside the rollout of SenseAware, FedEx will be expanding its ShipmentWatch service, which uses the SenseAware system to monitor shipments on behalf of clients. ShipmentWatch is provided by the FedEx Custom Critical unit, which monitors shipments from its SecureComm Command Centre at headquarters in Green, Ohio.

The services also combine with FedEx Priority Alert shipping services to provide a “end to end” solution.
