UPS to expand network in Brazil by 78%

UPS is expanding its nationwide coverage within Brazil by 78 with the expansion of its infrastructure in the state of Sao Paulo. The logistics giant said it will improve its transit times and territorial coverage in the world’s fifth biggest country under the plan, which will extend the company’s reach to more than 200 cities.

UPS is planning nine new operating facilities in the cities of Sao Carlos, Ribeirao Preto, Franca, Bauru, Sao Jose dos Campos, Sao Jose do Rio Preto, Botucatu, Aracatuba and Presidente Prudente.

The expansion programme should be completed by May 2015, it said.

The US company’s expansion in the state of Sao Paulo, Brazil’s most populous state and a major industrial and economic centre for the country, will increase the footprint of its operations to more than 216,000 square feet and 21 operating facilties in the country as a whole.

The growth should add more than 100 new jobs and 800 third party staff positions, UPS said, leaving its Brazilian work force numbering around 3,000.

The UPS ground fleet will be expanded to 115 vehicles, adding new routes for Santos, Sao Jose dos Campos, Sorocaba, Marilia and Campinas, to improve transit times by around two hours and introduce new tracking capabilities in the region.

Demand

Nadir Moreno, the president of UPS Brazil, said the expansion came in response to customer demand in the country, driven by a growing middle class, a rise in popularity for e-commerce and the development of small businesses in Brazil.

“The expansion of UPS’s services and the enhancement of our network in Brazil is part of a long-term strategy to meet the demands of our customers. With more flexible pick-up times and faster time in-transit options, we can better provide high-quality logistics solutions in the largest market in Latin America,” she said.

“Enhanced reliability and faster service will allow our customers to raise their inventory and provide high quality products that will help lead to increased profits,” added Moreno. “UPS is creating end-to-end benefits and maintaining a competitive advantage by offering tailored services and solutions for our customers.”

UPS has been operating in Brazil since 1989. The growth in Brazil’s economy has already seen the company revealing expansion plans for its healthcare logistics infrastructure in the country, and elsewhere in Latin America.

The firm announced back in April that it is adding its second dedicated healthcare facility in Brazil, an 80,000 square foot facility in Sao Paulo.
