Indonesian government to increase postal rates
The Indonesian government will implement a new basic postal tariff on July 1, 2002, increasing postal costs by 25 per cent for post cards and 41 per cent for letters between zero and 2,000 grams.
“In the meantime, there will be no increase in tariffs for airogram services,” Post and Telecommunication Director General of the Communication Ministry Djamhari Sirat told the press here Tuesday.
It was also reported that the tariff for letters to member countries of the Asia Pacific Postal Union (APPU) will increase by 36 per cent and 18 per cent to non-APPU member countries.
According to him, the government has to make an adjustment in postal tariff on the ground that operational cost of basic postal services has also recorded an increase as a result of high production cost.
Unfortunately, Djamhari failed to elaborate the details of main production cost.
With the new tariff, Djamhari said the postal price for a letter having a weight of about 20 grams went up from Rp900 (around 9.5 US cents) to Rp1000 in the city (accounting for an increase of 11 per cent) and Rp1500 for inter-city or inter province.
The tariff for post cards, which previously stood at Rp800, rose to Rp1000 (an increase of 25 per cent).
Meanwhile, a letter to be sent to an APPU member country with an average weight of about 20 grams will also rise to Rp3000 from Rp2250 (an increase of 43 per cent).
Then, a post cards to APPU member country which was previously set at Rp1000 will snowball to Rp1500 (an increase of 37 per cent), while that to a non APPU member increase from Rp1700 to Rp2000 (an increase of 18 per cent).
