United Parcel Opens German Retail Business
United Parcel Service Inc., the world’s biggest delivery company, plans to open 1,000 Mail Boxes Etc. stores in Germany in the next 10 years to gain more retail customers in Europe’s largest economy, Handelsblatt said, citing Gunnar Adalberth, head of United Parcel’s German unit.
The Atlanta-based company has German outlets of Mail Boxes Etc., which offers delivery, copier and postal services, in Bocholt and Berlin and wants to attract the individual customers that Deutsche Post AG serves, the paper quoted Adalberth as saying.
Germany’s state-controlled postal service, Europe’s largest, has 13,000 retail branches in Germany, and its McPaper AG stationery division sells products at Deutsche Post locations, Handelsblatt said.
United Parcel in April reported first-quarter profit fell 3.3 percent as businesses shipped fewer packages in a slower U.S. economy. Deliveries in Europe rose 13 percent in the period.
