Groupon launches new food delivery service in Chicago

Groupon has announced that it plans to expand further into the food delivery market with the launch of its Groupon To Go service in Chicago. In a statement issued yesterday (30 July), Groupon said that it has been piloting the initiative with 500 restaurants since March.

National food chains participating in Groupon To Go include Quiznos, Popeyes, Subway and Papa John’s. Groupon said that “notable” Chicago restaurants onboard with the scheme include: Ditka’s Restaurant, Al’s Beef, Adobo Grill, BIG & little’s, Freshii, Rosati’s Pizza, Star of Siam and Wishbone.

“Following Chicago,” added Groupon, “the service will expand to other major metros throughout the remainder of 2015, leading with Austin and Boston later this fall.”

Yesterday’s announcement is Groupon’s second big move in the food delivery sector this month. As previously reported by Post&Parcel, the company announced two weeks ago that it was buying OrderUp, an on-demand online and mobile food ordering and delivery marketplace that is already operating in nearly 40 markets across the United States.

Groupon sees Groupon To Go and OrderUp as complementary services. While Group To Go will be rolling out in the “major metros”, the company said that “OrderUp will continue to serve as Groupon’s delivery and takeout presence in midsize markets”.
