Swiss Post reaches “definitive decision” to buy in external trucking services

Swiss Post has announced that it has now reached a “definitive decision” to put its internal routes up for competitive tender and to buy in services from external transport companies. As previously reported by Post&Parcel, Swiss Post announced on 4 September that it was looking to “realign its internal transport unit” and that it intended to “no longer operate its own fleet of trucks over 3.5 tonnes for internal transport in future”. The company also announced that it was launching a “consultation process” to consider the various options.

In an official statement issued today (5 November), Swiss Post said that the consultation process was concluded on 26 October and – having considered the various proposals – the company “sees no feasible alternative to outsourcing its internal truck transport”.

Swiss Post said that it is “doing all it can to avoid redundancies”. All the 187 drivers affected by the
realignment will be offered “reasonable options for continued employment”, and the company said it would also be working with the unions to draw up a “social plan”  over the next few weeks.

Swiss Post concluded its statement with the assurance that “parcel deliveries to customers and small consignment transport as well as internal transport with delivery vans of up to 3.5 tonnes will not be affected by the measure”.
