Prospect of strike hangs over Finland’s postal service
Finland’s Posti has warned that there may be delays in mail delivery this week if a threatened strike by postal workers goes ahead. In a statement posted on its website today (16 November) Posti said that the Finnish Post and Logistics Union PAU will begin industrial action on Thursday (19 November) “if the negotiations fail to deliver results before that”.
Posti said that it “will do everything in its power to ensure that the strike affects its customers as little as possible”.
The Posti statement noted:
“PAU plans to organize the stoppages of work as follows:
- Stoppage of work regarding newspaper delivery in the capital region (Helsinki, Espoo, Vantaa, and Kauniainen) and Uusimaa, November 20–21, and 23-25, 2015.
- Stoppage of work regarding mail delivery in Helsinki, November 20 and 23-25, 2015.
- Stoppage of work regarding the postal center in Helsinki (including foreign production), logistics center in Vantaa (including foreign production), Siipitie foreign production and pricing service in Vantaa, Veturitie terminal in Helsinki, and logistics center and terminal in Lieto. All the aforementioned, November 19-21 and 23-25, 2015.
- Stoppage of all postal work in terminal in Jyväskylä, postal centers in Kuopio, Seinäjoki and Tampere, transports in Tampere. The early-morning delivery of newspapers Ilkka and Pohjalainen, and Keskisuomalainen in Jyväskylä are excluded from the stoppages of work
All the aforementioned, November 25-27 and 29-30, 2015 - Stoppage of work regarding mail delivery in Jyväskylä, Kuopio and Seinäjoki, November 26-27 and 30, 2015.”
Posti added that “all work related to safety and health are excluded from the stoppages of work”.
Local sources report that the postal workers are concerned about possible redundancies, and the use of temporary staff.
