Amazon going intermodal?
Following on from reports that Amazon is leasing trailers and planes, the e-retail giant now appears to be looking at the ocean freight business. According to an article published by USA Today, Amazon China, has registered with the US Federal Maritime Commission to become an ocean freight forwarder.
The registration as a Non-Vessel Operating Common Carrier (NVOCC) would allow Amazon China to provide ocean freight delivery to other companies. However, according to the USA Today report, the registration is for non-asset owners, which means that Amazon is not planning to buy its own ships (for now, at least).
An article published by re/code yesterday reported that Amazon China had registered as an NVOCC with the Federal Maritime Commission on 13 November 13.
