NZ Post: Waikato Operations Centre “on track” for June opening

New Zealand Post has reported that the construction of its integrated parcels and letters processing, delivery and distribution operations centre at Te Rapa is “moving at pace” and it expects the facility to be operational starting mid-June 2016. The company signed an agreement with Civil Place Limited last year to lease a new 8000m² building at Arthur Porter Drive, Te Rapa Gateway.

New Zealand Post’s Waikato and Bay of Plenty Regional Delivery Manager Dean Horsup commented: “The Waikato Operations Centre is a multi-million dollar commitment to the region that sets up New Zealand Post for parcels growth – as more people embrace online shopping – and for the future delivery of mail in an efficient and sustainable manner.”

The hub will be a base for around 45 posties, 13 rural delivery contractors and 35 couriers, and will be a significant centre for Post’s distribution network in the wider Waikato region. The total investment will be between $8m and $12m over a decade.

“The new building will accommodate much larger line-haul trucks, and the trucks will only have to deliver to one place, rather than two in Hamilton as they do now, and will be loaded and unloaded under cover,” said Horsup.

“The new Paxster electric vehicles that carry letters and parcels to residential neighbourhoods will also operate from the centre over time, as the eco vehicles are rolled out nationwide.”

The New Zealand Post functions in Hamilton that will move to the site are:

  • All of Express Couriers Ltd (Courier Post and Pace)
  • Hamilton mail processing
  • Hamilton mail delivery branch
  • Rural Post
  • Some administration functions.

The Waikato Mail Service Centre has been sold for an undisclosed sum.
