Amazon unveils plans to create more than 100,000 new full-time jobs across US

Amazon has announced that it plans to grow its full-time US-based workforce from 180,000 in 2016 to over 280,000 by mid-2018. The online retail giant is already one of the country’s biggest employers and its growth over the past few years has been very impressive. In 2011, the company employed just 30,000.

Many of the roles will be in new fulfilment centres that have been announced over the past few months and are currently under construction in Texas, California, Florida, New Jersey and many other states across the country.

In the official statement that Amazon issued yesterday (12 January), the company emphasised that in addition to direct job creation, Amazon businesses like Marketplace and Amazon Flex will also continue to create hundreds of thousands of jobs for people across the US.

The timing of the Amazon announcement is interesting. US President-elect Donald Trump met with Alibaba founder Jack Ma on Monday – and Ma spoke of plans to create a million US jobs, by providing more Chinese customers for US exporters.
