TNT Logistics to takeover entire warehousing operations for Pirelli in Germany and establish new warehouse
TNT Logistics is significantly extending its partnership with tyre manufacturer Pirelli. TNT Logistics will immediately take over the entire warehousing activities at the German-based Höchst/Odenwald production site, which until now had been carried out by the manufacturer. In a further move, TNT Logistics will construct a new 40,000 m2 spare parts warehouse commencing 2004.
TNT Logistics is to take over the entire warehousing activities of the Pirelli/Metzeler Group at the Breuberg/Höchst production site in Odenwald with immediate effect. This encompasses the full management of the 40,000 m2 warehouse as well as various added-value services. Until now, Pirelli had arranged these operations through its wholly-owned subisidiary Industrie-Spedition Odenwald (ISO). Under the contract, TNT Logistics will acquire ISO and its 115 employees. The logistics operator successfully competed against 20 other companies during the tendering process for these services.
In a second move, TNT Logistics will assume joint responsibility for the reorganisation of the entire warehousing and distribution operations of the Pirelli/Metzeler Group from 2004. The tyre manufacturer will then no longer divide its warehousing and distribution activities according to car or motorcycle tyres but rather markets. Products for original equipment and the export market will be stored at and distributed from Breuberg/Höchst. For the spare parts market, TNT Logistics will establish a new warehouse with approximately 40,000 m2 of storage capacity in the Greater Frankfurt area. Around 160 people will be employed in the warehouses, which will both be run by TNT Logistics. This means that all jobs will remain in place under the new organisation.
For the distribution of spare parts – which last year reached almost half a million consignments – TNT Logistics will introduce a same-day service in the Rhine/Main region. The logistics operator already guarantees a 24-hour service throughout Germany. TNT Logistics is Pirelli’s sole transport service provider in the spare parts market.
TNT Logistics and Pirelli/Metzeler have enjoyed a successful partnership since 1989 – first in Germany-wide distribution and then in warehousing for motorcycle tyres. The new contract will run until mid-2006, with an option to extend the contract yearly.
