Amazon racks up $136bn sales for 2016

Amazon has reported that its net sales for 2016 totalled $136bn, up 27% on the previous year. Operating income for year was $4.2bn, compared to $2.2bn in 2015. Net income was $2.4bn, up from $596m.

The continuing roll-out and expansion of Amazon’s Prime programme helped to drive the growth.

“Our Prime team’s customer obsession kept them busy in 2016,” said Jeff Bezos, Amazon founder and CEO. “Prime members can now choose from over 50 million items with free two-day shipping — up 73% since 2015.”

As previously reported by Post&Parcel, Amazon announced on Tuesday (31 January) that it is set to open a new centralized air hub at the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky Airport (CVG) in Hebron, which will support the retail giant’s new dedicated fleet of Prime Air cargo plans.

Amazon also announced recently that it will be creating more than 100,000 new, full-time jobs in the US over the next 18 months to support its growth strategy.
