Somerfield elects Exel for transportation solution
Exel’s partnership with Somerfield has been further strengthened with the award of a new transportation contract in the North West of England. With this new business, Exel will now provide services to a significant proportion of the 1,300 Somerfield stores across the UK equating to over £80 million per annum and including contracts in place until 2007. This new contract focuses on the North West of England with Exel providing distribution services from a new regional distribution centre (RDC) located at Lea Green, near St Helens. The RDC will supply Somerfield and Kwik Save stores throughout the region handling up to 9,000 product lines at any one time, including fresh, chilled, ambient and frozen goods.
The Lea Green site will replace a number of existing operations in the North West and will commence operations during May this year.
Exel’s partnership with Somerfield spans over 15 years and encompasses a wide range of solutions that support Somerfield’s distribution network. These include regional distribution centres, stock control; fleet and multi-temperature warehouse management, transportation, an extensive shared-user network incorporating bonded warehousing, customer services, recycling and importation.
Exel is also involved in value add and development projects that involve in-store logistics, strategic network remodelling, international inbound consolidation and UK supplier consolidation for the food retailer.
