UK Royal Mail to cut lorry journeys
The Royal Mail said its lorry journeys will be cut from 8,500 a day to 2,500 under its plans for a more efficient distribution network, reducing its carbon dioxide emissions by 30%.
There would be no job cuts at the main rail/road sites at Willesden in north London, Wishaw near Glasgow and Warrington, Cheshire, and there would be no new job losses anywhere in the Royal Mail.
It was “totally untrue” to say that the plans would be a disaster for the environment, because taking mail to and from train stations involved significant lorry movements.
The Royal Mail would be subsidising rail freight firm EWS if it renewed its contract, an official pointed out.
