Door to door parcel deliveries up 3.7% in Japan

The number of parcels handled by door-to-door parcel delivery services in Japan in fiscal 2002 grew 3.7 pct from the previous year to 2,751.36 million units, the government said Monday.

The rise reflected increased shopping by mail order, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport said.

Of deliveries by truck, accounting for 99 pct of the total, the “takkyubin” service of Yamato Transport Co. and its two partners enjoyed the biggest share of 36.0 pct.

Parcels sent via the takkyubin service were up 3.8 pct at 980.43 million units.

The Sagawa express service of Sagawa Express Co. ranked second with a share of 32.3 pct, followed by 14.1 pct for the Pelican service of Nippon Express Co. and its 18 partners.
