TNT to establish depot at Seoul's Incheon Int Airport
Multinational logistics firm TNT is planning to use Incheon International Airport as the base for its operations in northern Asia, South Korea’s Civil Aviation Safety Authority said.
The provider of express delivery services and logistics supply chain solutions has revealed its intention to invest €7 million (US$8.4 million) in building a base depot on 6,930 square meters of land near the airport by the latter half of 2005, the government agency said.
The aviation authority said TNT intends to utilize the depot as a hub for sorting centers for countries such as China, Japan, Russia and Mongolia.
Established in 1946, TNT employs more than 40,000 workers worldwide and has a fleet of 43 jet freighter aircraft together with 20,000 road vehicles organized by a worldwide network of nearly 1,000 company-owned depots. It provides door-to-door delivery services for documents, parcels and freight in 215 countries.
The Civil Aviation Safety Authority said TNT’s move came after rival courier DHL recently decided to set up a base depot near the airport.
The authority says it is also seeking to attract air freight carriers and other logistics giants like FedEx and UPS to the airport.
