China’s biggest dispatch station for air mail breaks ground
International air mail will soon find it easier to reach China, as a new hub for air mail transfer with the largest handling capacity in the country broke ground.
China has invested 100 million yuan (some 12 million US dollars) in the project, to be located at the Beijing Capital International Airport and go into operation in the first half of next year.
China Postal Airlines has bought three Boeing 737 planes as the mail carrier, which will work around the clock and increase the transferring speed remarkably.
The new station covers a building space of 30,000 square meters and could handle 22,000 mail bags per day, compared to 15,000 bags now. By 2012, its handling capacity could nearly triple to 42,000 bags.
China’s postal authority has also planned to launch a “green pass” for mail to and from Europe, the United States and some neighboring countries including the Republic of Korea and Japan.
