UPS supports senate postal reform legislation

Upon introduction of a comprehensive postal reform bill in the Senate, UPS has pledged its support for the measure and expressed optimism that Congress could complete work on the important issue this year.

The Postal Accountability and Enhancement Act, S. 2468, introduced yesterday by Sens. Susan Collins (R-Maine) and Tom Carper (D-Del.), requires significant operational, structural and financial reform of the U.S. Postal Service. The proposal was developed after extensive hearings before the Senate Governmental Affairs Committee when Committee members heard from a variety of sectors interested in postal reform.

“The Collins-Carper bill marks a strong step toward long-term, comprehensive postal reform,” said UPS Chairman and CEO Mike Eskew. “We are optimistic that Congress can modernize the law governing postal operations for the 21st century.

“We commend Chairman Collins for her leadership on this important and critical issue to our nation’s economy and Sen. Carper for his commitment to an efficient U.S. Postal Service,” Eskew added.

The Collins-Carper bill provides the USPS with a number of operational flexibilities while imposing necessary oversight and regulatory controls to maintain a competitive balance in the mailing industry.
