DHL to expand Global Information Services Centre in Asia Pacific

DHL, the world’s leading express and logistics company, will invest more than USD13 million to expand the company’s Global Information Services (GIS) Centre located at Malaysia’s Multimedia Super Corridor in Cyberjaya, a key facility in the global co-ordination of information technology initiatives throughout the DHL network. This brings DHL’s total investments in Asia Pacific over the past few years to over USD1.15 billion, reflecting DHL’s commitment to service excellence.

One of three strategic Information Services Centres serving DHL’s worldwide network, GIS Cyberjaya is responsible for the design, development, implementation and the service delivery management of DHL’s IT solutions.

DHL’s Global IS group, which includes the IS Centres located in Scottsdale, Arizona, USA and in Prague, Czech Republic – scheduled to be operational in September 2004 – also provides centralised technical and application support functions. DHL`s global IT spend totals USD1.21 billion to date.

“This latest investment in expanding our regional IT capacity at GIS Cyberjaya reflects our commitment to maintaining a strong Global IS presence in Malaysia’s Multimedia Super Corridor and underscores DHL’s growth strategy in Asia Pacific. As DHL grows from strength to strength, we will continue to deliver innovative IT solutions that support our business and ultimately translates into improved service quality for our customers,” explained Mr John Mullen, Chief Executive Officer, Asia Pacific, DHL Express.

The new building annexe comprising four levels with a net built-up area of 85,000 sq ft will be linked to the existing USD52 million GIS building via two bridges, bringing the total capacity of GIS Cyberjaya to 185,000 sq ft. It will accommodate 550 people and include a new development data centre, 10 training rooms, over 20 discussion or meeting rooms, a cafeteria and staff recreation area. Built to the highest specifications to meet operational resilience levels demanded by DHL`s business, construction of the new annexe begins this month and is scheduled for completion in mid-2005.

“Due to the outstanding growth of regional IT support services to DHL’s customers, we have outgrown the existing facility and exceeded the intended capacity. The new GIS Cyberjaya building will support our immediate needs, and with more projects in the pipeline, we foresee our total staff numbers continuing to increase up to 700 by end 2005, and 1,000 by end 2006,” said Mr Michael Pilkington, Chief Information Officer, DHL Asia Pacific.

To date, DHL has invested over USD1.15 billion to expand and enhance its infrastructure, technology and network in the region. This includes the Asia Pacific Quality Control Centre – the nerve centre for all DHL Asia Pacific shipment movement operations control – which is part of the USD300 million investment into infrastructure development projects in Asia Pacific since 2000; the new USD100 million DHL Central Asia Hub unveiled in Hong Kong last month; and USD215 million spent on expansion initiatives in China which comprises new Logistics Centres, Spare Parts Centres and offices
