TNT Logistics grows 900% in Asia

TNT announced today that its logistics business in Asia has grown a massive 900% in the past five years. The company also announced the appointment of Colin Moran as managing director for TNT Logistics in Asia to lead the company’s logistics operations in Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Singapore, Japan, Korea, Vietnam and the Philippines.

In his last appointment as managing director, TNT Indonesia, he was responsible for growing TNT Indonesia’s logistics business by over 200% in five years, clinching key business wins from industrial and FMCG companies in Indonesia.

“The logistics sector in Asia has grown tremendously in the past five years, but there’s even more room to grow,” said Moran. “In Asia, the percentage of logistics outsourced to third party logistics providerslike TNT is less than 5% of total logistics spend. This is far less than the 30% share 3PLs command in developed countries like the US and Europe.”

He revealed that, based on TNT’s estimates, the company expects the logistics sector to grow a further 20% – 30% per annum in the next five years. “As companies in Asia explore ways to improve and expand their existing supply chain, 3PLs with the relevant sector expertise and global reach become the obvious choice.”

According to Moran, the automotive, industrial and consumer goods industries in particular have been among the early adopters of outsourced logistics, particularly in markets like Thailand, Singapore and Indonesia, which have seen disproportionately high growth. “These industries have been quick to recognise that outsourcing supply chain management delivers benefits while enabling businesses to focus on core competencies.”

In his new appointment, Moran will work closely with the Express Division, headed by Michael Drake, regional MD of TNT Express Asia, and will focus on providing improved customised logistics solutions for key electronic and automotive industries and value for money solutions in the consumer goods sectors. These key sectors account for 85% of TNT’s revenue in Asia.
