Poste Italiane could be set to deliver banking services

The CEO of Italian post office Poste Italiane, Massimo Sarmi, has revealed that his organisation is considering applying for a banking licence. It could do so in July, when it presents its latest strategic plan, but Mr Sarmi stressed that the company did not currently possess the skills required to operate as a bank.

Mr Sarmi was speaking as Poste Italiane presented its results for 2005. They showed a 13.6 per cent increase in turnover, to 16bn euros, and a 19.4 per cent climb in net profits, to 349m euros.
