Austrian Post to offer in-house delivery from July

Not at home, no extra trips to pick up and still a safe parking solution: For these reasons, Austrian Post carried out the first tests of in-house delivery in 2021. The interest was enormous with more than 2,000 registrations within a very short time.

Now, together with technology partner Nuki, Austrian Post is taking the next step and launching door-to-door delivery as a regular service. In the first step, Austrian Post will activate 200 users from the registrations received. If you don’t have a Nuki Smart Lock yet, you will receive one free of charge. In the coming months, more users will be continuously activated for doorroom delivery.

“The front door delivery from Post and Nuki is an absolute market novelty that has never before progressed beyond the pilot phase in Europe. We are daring to take this innovation and are now offering anteroom delivery as a standard service for the first time. Austrian Post can now deliver parcels safely and reliably to the homes of its recipients,” explains Peter Umundum, Member of the Management Board for Parcel & Logistics, Österreichische Post AG.

How anteroom delivery works

For delivery to the front door, the front door or apartment is equipped with a Smart Lock from Nuki. Households that already have a Nuki Smart Lock can continue to use it directly, and Austrian Post will provide all other of the 200 users with a Smart Lock free of charge.

Users now authorize Austrian Post as a delivery partner for opening their house or apartment door via the Nuki app. The door is then opened by the delivery staff with their mobile device and a separate doormat in the anteroom marks the place where the parcel should be placed. The delivery staff then leave the house or apartment again and lock the door.

To start, Austrian Post is now activating 200 users from all registrations received in the first step. The prerequisites are a minimum age of 18 years, a delivery address in Austria and compatibility of the door lock with the Nuki Smart Lock. Registrations are now open. After the launch of these 200 users, Austrian Post will continuously activate additional users for door-to-door delivery over the next few months. If users do not yet have a Nuki Smart Lock, a one-time fee of 289 euros must be paid for the hardware. The reception option of the in-house delivery is always free of charge.

Since anteroom delivery is only offered by Austrian Post, the company is giving these 200 users a voucher for an annual AllesPost subscription. Recipients can thus receive all parcels by post directly in the anteroom, regardless of the transport service commissioned by the online shop.

Pick-up service 
As part of the in-house delivery, Austrian Post also offers the option of expanding its pick-up service to include a desired place in one’s own anteroom. With the Nuki Smart Lock, Austrian Post employees can open the front door of their house or apartment and pick up to five pre-franked parcels directly from the anteroom. The parcels must be placed on the special doormat so that the delivery person knows which shipments are to be picked up. The 200 users will receive two vouchers to try out this service free of charge.

This project was funded by the Federal Ministry for Climate Action, Environment, Energy, Mobility, Innovation and Technology (BMK) and handled by Schieneninfrastruktur-Dienstleistungsgesellschaft mbH (SCHIG mbH) as part of the Logistics Promotion programme.
