Austria Post to modernise the logistics centre in Wals-Siezenheim

After 25 years and several adaptations, the logistics centre in Wals-Siezenheim is about to undergo a comprehensive modernisation in order to be prepared for the future of Austria Post.

Planning is currently underway for the complex conversion, which will take place in several stages. Due to the location and importance of the logistics centre in the Austria Post network, operations will be maintained throughout the construction period. The logistics centre in Thalgau will relieve parcel sorting in Wals-Siezenheim during this time.

Exactly 25 years ago, the parcel sorting system at the Wals-Siezenheim logistics centre was put into operation. Austria Post had already been using automatic parcel distribution systems before, but they were no longer able to cope with the increasing volume of parcels. For this reason, the first modern parcel logistics centre with a high-performance sorting system was put into operation in Wals-Siezenheim in September 1999, as they are now standard at Austrian Post.

“25 years ago, we laid the foundation for our current parcel network in Salzburg. In 1999, we transported 42 million parcels throughout Austria, today there are already 200 million – and the trend is rising. In order to be able to grow further, we will comprehensively modernise the logistics centre in Wals-Siezenheim. In this way, we are continuing this success story and providing our employees with modern and contemporary workplaces,” explains Peter Umundum, Member of the Management Board for Parcel & Logistics, Österreichische Post AG.

The first 8,000 m² of the logistics center in Wals-Siezenheim originally housed only parcel sorting, but now mail sorting is also located there. Around 140 employees ensure that almost 5,500 parcels per hour are sorted – and that with the original machines, which have been in operation for 25 years thanks to good maintenance. Since 2020, the nearby logistics centre in Thalgau, where up to 5,000 parcels per hour can be sorted, has also been providing support.
