Correos continues to make progress in its transformation pro-cess

Correos joins in the celebration of World Post Day, which marks every 9 October the founding of the Universal Postal Union (UPU), the United Nations specialised agency for postal services. Established in Bern in 1874, the UPU is one of the earliest examples of multilateralism.

On this day, the UPU’s 192 member countries recognize the essential role played by postal operators around the world, not only as providers of the Universal Postal Service, but also as a global network that gives citizens access to services of general interest.

According to UPU Director General Masahiko Metoki, this year’s theme, “One postal network, infinite possibilities,” highlights the role of postal infrastructure as “much more than a system for the circulation of letters and mail.” “It is one of the most enduring examples of international cooperation, underpinned by a network of trust that connects people, communities and nations through a shared commitment to universal service, trust and reliability,” he adds.

Once again, the UPU Director General has expressed his gratitude to the millions of postal professionals whose dedication and professionalism make the daily operation of this global network possible. He also calls on the whole sector to keep working together to build a postal infrastructure capable of creating new opportunities for governments, businesses and, above all, the people and communities it serves.

 A constantly evolving global network

The global postal network is consolidating its position as one of the largest networks of cooperation and connection serving people, businesses, public administrations and governments. This year, World Post Day highlights the strength of an infrastructure built over generations, capable of evolving and adapting to society’s new needs.

Today, more than 660,000 post offices and 4.6 million sector professionals, supported by digital technologies and international partnerships, make up one of the largest service ecosystems in the world. This extensive network has become a gateway to essential services for citizens, businesses and public administrations.

Human connection is one of the core values of the postal network worldwide. Every day, sector professionals act as trusted links between governments, businesses and the people they serve. Their work helps businesses reach new markets, supports entrepreneurs and enables rural communities with less access to certain resources to benefit from essential services and new opportunities.

In this process of renewal, postal operators continue to create value for society. From delivering public services to driving business growth through e-commerce, the postal network expands access to financial and health services, promotes a secure digital transformation and continues to adapt in order to remain relevant for future generations..

Essential services for citizens
Once again, Correos joins in the celebration of this day as it continues advancing in its transformation process, aimed at strengthening its public mission. With the launch of the 2024-2028 Strategic Plan and the amendment of the Postal Law, which recognizes its value as a strategic asset for social, territorial and economic cohesion, Correos has become the State’s ideal instrument for providing essential services to all citizens, classified as Services of General Economic Interest (SGEI).

Thanks to its extensive network, made up of more than 2,300 offices and nearly 6,000 rural postmen and postwomen across the country, the company facilitates access to postal services in rural areas and to basic financial services, such as cash withdrawals and deposits in municipalities with fewer than 500 inhabitants. It also helps bring administrative procedures closer to all citizens and places its human and material resources at the State’s disposal to strengthen its capacity to respond to emergencies or security needs.

In its aim to expand its role as a point of access to the Administration, the Correos network allows an increasing number of procedures to be carried out, from submitting and registering applications addressed to the competent bodies to paying fees and taxes, disbursing subsidies and handling certain matters related to public debt. In this way, the company reinforces its public service mission and contributes to territorial cohesion, sustainability and the well-being of society. It is also currently working with the Government on the regularization process for migrants.

This transformation strengthens Correos’ position as a company with an essential public mission that goes beyond its activity as a postal operator. The company thus advances in its role as an instrument of the State, bringing services of general economic interest closer to citizens and responding to their new needs in a context marked by technological and social change.

To celebrate World Post Day in 2026, several activities for employees and the public have been prepared, this time focused on telegraphy, which is closely tied to the history of Correos. Since 5 October, visitors can see the exhibition “From the Optical Telegraph to the Teleprinter: The Evolution of Telegraph Communication Systems” in the lobby of the Correos Clara Campoamor building in Madrid, which includes guided tours on Wednesdays. In addition, on 14 October, the president of the Association of Friends of the Telegraph, Vicente Rubio, will give the lecture “Electric Telegraphy: Origins and International Context. The International Telecommunication Union,” to be held in the Auditorium of the company’s corporate headquarters in Madrid.
