FedEx to create 270 jobs

FedEx Ground will expand its distribution facility in Cobb County, USA, adding about 270 jobs in the next two years. The company plans to add 85,000 square feet to its ground package distribution centre near McCollum Field in the Kennesaw area.

“It’s a great coup to have a company of FedEx’s quality wanting to grow in your county,” said Don Beaver, executive director of the Development Authority of Cobb County.

With the added space, FedEx will be able to simultaneously sort packages for local, regional and national distribution, Beaver said. Now, the company dedicates certain times of day for different shipments.

Many of the jobs will be part-time, said David Westrick, a FedEx Ground spokesman.

“It’s loading and un-loading tractor trailers for the most part,” he said. The package handlers work four-hour shifts around the clock. He could not give a salary range.

The Development Authority of Cobb County on Tuesday approved a $40m bond issue that FedEx will use to build the addition. FedEx is responsible for repaying the industrial revenue bonds, Beaver said.

FedEx opened its Cobb distribution centre in 2006.
