USPS trim endangered post office list

USPS has trimmed its list of post offices facing possible closure to 371 from 413, reports Business First. The article continues:

The Postal Service operates about 37,000 post offices, stations and branches, and closing some of them is part of a massive cost-cutting program aimed at improving its sagging finances. The quasi-government agency lost an estimated $3bn in fiscal 2009, ended last month, and it has targeted $6bn in cost-reduction measures, including a hiring freeze, work-force reductions and job buyouts.

The Postal Service began examining 3,600 offices in the summer. Agency officials have indicated they expect to close offices sometime after January. Observers have said a final advisory on the offices to be closed could come in November.
