FedEx Express pledges more flexible US express service

FedEx Express is making “significant enhancements” to its business express delivery service for the domestic US market. The company is looking to attract customers from the UPS Next Day Early AM service by offering 8am and Saturday deliveries as part of its FedEx First Overnight service.

Other improvements include broadening the window available each day for on-call pickups from businesses.

Customers in more than 7,000 US zip code areas will be given an extra hour in the business day to prepare last-minute shipments.

Fed Ex Corporation said its First Overnight service now delivers to more zip codes than the UPS next-day express service, having doubled its coverage in the last five years.

T. Michael Glenn, executive vice president for Market Development and Communications at FedEx Corp, said the move was about providing more convenience and flexible shipping options for customers.

Glenn said: “With new, faster services and enhanced, industry-leading options, FedEx is committed to doing whatever it takes to offer our customers superior service and value.”

Introduced 15 years ago, FedEx First Overnight is now available in all 50 states, delivering items by 8am the next business day.

The service is designed for highly time-sensitive packages, particularly for the manufacturing, banking, law and entertainment industries.

Adding the Saturday option brings the service in line with the FedEx Home Delivery, which already delivers on Saturdays at no extra charge.

Most of the company’s 1,800 US-based FedEx Office stores are also now open on Saturdays.

Along with its First Overnight service, FedEx is expanding its service area coverage for inbound FedEx International First shipments. The service delivers shipments from more than 60 countries in one or two business days by 8-8.30am.
