Presidential backing for Pakistan Post
The President of Pakistan has highlighted the importance of the country’s postal system as a means of communication. President Asif Ali Zardari said that his government understood the need to modernise the country’s postal network to meet Pakistan’s social and economic development.
“Connectivity among peoples of different geographical locations, cultural backgrounds and level of development is a key to fostering understanding among them and thereby contribute to peace to development,” the president told the Associated Press of Pakistan (APP).
“Over the decades the postman has been silently working to connect people across distances and cultures. Even today, in the age of electronic communications, the post has been making laudable contributions towards this end,” he added.
The president also put huge importance on the network as a platform to provide remittance services between Pakistani expatriates and family members who remain in their homeland.
In terms of modernisation, the president outlined the opportunity for Public Private Partnership (PPP) investment. He told the APP: “The increase in the speed and frequency with which people are communicating within the country and across, the national borders offer great opportunities for PPP and for adoption of innovative ideas for modernising postal delivery system to enhance its efficiency and reliability.”
