Korea Post Builds Mobile Mail Service System
Korea Post (KP), the postal service arm of the Ministry of Information and Communication, said yesterday it will build a mobile mail service system by 2004 on a gradual basis.
Under the plan, the government will supply personal digital
assistants for around 14,000 mailpersons over the next three years,
said KP official Kwon Moon-hong. The government’s decision reflected growing fears about the
proliferation of the Internet. While immediate data is unavailable, the landline mailing service
has been severely hurt by electronic mail and is being driven into
extinction. When the mobile mail delivery system rides on track, customers will
be able to track the current location of their sent or expected mail
in real time via the Internet that is connected to each mailperson’s
PDAs. In addition, Korea Post can file customer information _ such as
address, telephone number and postal code _ and use the database for
other services such as e-commerce and postal savings. Korea Post will hold an open bidding to select its PDA supplier next
month. Korea Post said it will be able to save 14 billion won annually due
to the introduction of the new system.
