Correios (Brazil) May Control Express Market

“DHL, owner of 47% of the Brazilian express services market and with a US$60mil turnover in 2000, is fearing the competition with the state owned company Correios do Brasil. The new postal law and the creation of Agencia Nacional de Servicos de Correios might reduce at 50% the activities of courier companies operating in Brazil, according to Abrace (Associacao Brasileira das Empresas de Transporte Internacional e Expresso de Cargas). The law aims to restructure Correios and to increase the competition in the sector. Between 1999 and 2000 DHL invested US$10mil to restructure its operations in Brazil. Its coverage area was expanded from 300 cities to 1,100.”
