Swiss Post sees increase in letters to Santa

Swiss Post helped Santa reply to 16,896 letters over the Christmas period, the operator has said. This saw a rise from the 15,215 letters received the previous year.

Most of the replies (10,272) were sent to French-speaking Switzerland, 2,793 to Ticino, 2,528 to German-speaking Switzerland and 5 to the Romansh regions.

The postal team, comprising six of Santa Claus’s helpers in Chiasso, did their best to track down children who submitted incomplete or imprecise addresses. In this way, it was possible to reply with a small gift to almost 96% of the children’s letters. The total number of replies was thus 16,241, of which 200 were sent abroad.

For the past five years, the number of letters received has amounted to around 16,000. When the campaign was first launched in 1950-51, Swiss Post received 450 letters, 250 of which came from abroad.
