Post Danmark launches mobile alternative to stamps
Post Danmark is launching a new service so customers can use mobile phones to pay postage fees – eliminating the need for a stamp. Mobilporto (Mobile Postage) “enables users to frank their letters in a handy and quick way regardless of where and when the postage stamp is needed”, the company said.
Customers can send a text message to the operator and in return will receive a code. Mailers can then write the code in the top right hand corner of the envelope, instead of using a stamp.
The cost of postage will be charged on the phone bill, and the posting of letters must take place within seven days.
Henrik Larsen, head of private customers in Post Danmark, said: “We know that the Danes enjoy sending and receiving letters, but we also know that sending a letter by some people is found to be a bit burdensome for which reason they choose not to use the letter.
“With our new service, it becomes easier to send a letter because – when carrying a mobile phone – there will always be a stamp at hand.”
Initially, postage will be available via Mobilporto for standard letters to 50g, at a cost of DKK 8, plus standard text message fees.
“We will, of course, still keep the Danish stamp tradition alive as the stamp adds qualities to a letter. However, Mobile Postage is a useful supplement for those in need of a stamp regardless of place and time,” added Larsen.
