Environmental Award: Safeway and Scania

The partnerships between Safeway and Scania has led to the development of a truck running on compressed natural gas, with the first 40 of these about to enter service. Quiet in operation, the trucks surpass the criteria for Euro 5, and the factors combine to allow Safeway to challenge delivery curfews, potentially cutting traffic congestion, improving air quality and vehicle utilisation and enabling a cut in fleet size. Judges applauded the ambitious and innovative programme, and the determined approach.
