$24,000 fine for freight company

TNT Australia has been fined $A24,000 in the Darwin Magistrates’ Court for failing to provide a safe working environment. The freight forwarding company’s Darwin office also paid $A2280 in lost wages and the hospital costs of an 18-year-old youth on work experience who lost the skin on the tops of two fingers while operating a pressing machine in October 2000. TNT Australia said it had instituted new measures to test faulty equipment at its Winnellie warehouse
