Parascript wins USPS order for 191 OCR systems

Colorado-based company Parascript has won a multi-million dollar contract to provide parcel and bundled mail sorting equipment for the US Postal Service. The firm will provide 191 Automated Parcel Bundle Sorters for deployment in facilities across the United States.

The sorters use Parascript’s Optical Character Recognition (OCR) technology to locate and recognise mailpiece addresses, optional endorsement lines and presort stickers on parcels and bundled mail.

The equipment will also output finalised address information on pieces based on the USPS address directory database.

Alexander Filatov, president and chief technology officer for Parascript said his company was providing a “unique solution” for recognising both printed and hand-written addresses.

He said: “This creates a great opportunity for increased efficiency, greater flexibility in system lifecycle management, and a better return on investment.”

OCR technology uses cameras and image-analysis software to identify and read addresses on mailpieces. Parascript’s technology has been used by postal agencies around the world, including the Royal Mail, Deutsche Post, Russion Post, Poste Italiane, Posten and TNT.

Parascript’s project manager for the USPS contract, Kaz Jaszczak, was unable to provide further details to Post&Parcel on the contract and when the technology would be deployed under the agreement with USPS.
