Guernsey Post to end Saturday deliveries from next month

Guernsey Post is switching its delivery service to a five-day week from the end of next month. The Channel Island postal operator said it will be running a Monday to Friday delivery service from Monday 26th March, although time-definite packet and parcel services will be extended to Saturdays.

Eliminating Saturday deliveries will reduce the company’s operating costs by GBP 400,000 a year, it said, helping offset the continuing decline in mail volumes.

The States of Guernsey made the decision last October to allow Guernsey Post the freedom to reduce its universal service obligation from six days per week to five days.

George Jennings, the director of operations at Guernsey Post, said the company would shortly begin sending out leaflets to households to inform them of the change.

“Our last standard Saturday delivery will be taking place on 24th March,” he said.

“However, we have taken on board customer feedback and I’m pleased to announce that we are going to be extending our time-definite packet and parcel services to include Saturday deliveries.

“This means that our customers will still have the option to receive their packets and parcels on a Saturday – a service that continues to grow in demand,” said Jennings.

Guernsey Post made a GBP 900,000 operating loss in its financial year up to the end of March 2011, in a year during which the Post saw the first decline in bulk mail volumes for two decades.
