Freemans awards contract to Allport

Freemans, the home shopping mail-order company has selected logistics specialist Allport to handle its inbound European merchandise.
The catalogue company hopes to benefit from the economies of scale which Allport can deliver through its relationship with Grattan, another leading catalogue company. The benefits to both customers could include lower bottom-line costs, as well as secondary effects such as quality control services.
Allport has been the sole European carrier for Grattan catalogue products since March 99. Grattan and Freemans products will now be moved through common warehouses across Europe. This means that the products of both companies can be consolidated to maximise fleet efficiency.
As Allport is now handling both Grattan and Freemans European imports, said Chris Hale, director seafreight at Allport, we will utilise mixed company loading at common European centres to provide the economies of scale which will reduce bottom-line costs. Because cargo is costed on a volume basis, Allport will aim at loading up to 90 cubic metres of cargo into one trailer. This means we can ensure our trailers are running at capacity when they leave the depot.
