PostComm in row on 'slow' liberalisation
Postal services commission Postcomm has entered the liberalisation row by attacking Consignia’s attempts to slow the deconstruction of its monopoly.
As tension mounts over the forthcoming postal strike, a letter leaked to Precision Marketing reveals that Postcomm chief executive Martin Stanley is accusing Consignia of putting ‘inappropriate’ pressure on MPs, by using the organisation’s financial difficulties to scare the Government into stalling liberalisation.
In his letter to Consignia group managing director Stuart Sweetman, Stanley criticises an “irresponsible, inaccurate” letter sent to MPs on March 6, in which Consignia claimed it would lose #2bn in revenue unless Postcomm changes its pro-posals. He joins Postwatch chairman Peter Carr in condemnation of Consignia’s tactics (PM March 8).
Stanley states: “Even assuming that many new entrants are queuing up to enter the market, Consignia is in by far the best position to compete for and retain the lion’s share of the bulk mailing business.”
