FedEx Express to open €4m gateway in Copenhagen later this year

FedEx Express has completed the external structure on a new gateway facility in Copenhagen Airport, Denmark. The company said its new EUR 4m facility measures 8,000 square metres and is set to open at the end of 2015.

With the building itself complete, the next stage sees the installation of “state-of-the-art” automated sorting systems, which will be capable of processing 11,500 packages each day.

When fully up and running, around 120 staff will work at the new gateway, which will also boast areas for Dangerous Goods and Cold Storage.

Helena Jansson, vice president, Finance, Europe, at FedEx Express, said the development was “right on track” after six months of construction.

“It means we will be ready to help our customers in Denmark and Sweden boost their cross-border business during the busy peak season at the end of this year,” she said.

FedEx said the new gateway facility will use energy recovery technology on its conveyor belts that will capture energy from the movement, to be converted into usable electricity.

The company said it has worked with Danish social enterprise Incita to produce 5,000 test packages to run through the new automated sort system and fine tune the technology.

Incita supports people who have had to stop working because of illness, disability or other unfortunate circumstances, helping them back into work.

”We are excited to play a role in testing the new FedEx Express facility. Fifteen employees at Incita are involved in producing 5,000 packages in all shapes and sizes in our workshop, which will be used to test the new sorting system at the facility”, said Christina Grøntved, CEO of Incita. “We hope that this project will help some of our employees re-build their confidence so that they can move on to new opportunities.”
