Germany loses Deutsche Post aid case

The European Court of Justice ruled on Wednesday that the German government breached European Union law in providing state aid to Deutsche Post. In 2012, the European Commission considered that Germany had given aid to Deutsche Post which gave it “an undue economic advantage over competitors”. The EC therefore ordered the German government to recover the money. In the following year, the EC took Germany to the Court of Justice over its failure to comply.

There is some dispute over the amount of money involved. EU regulators estimated that between 500 million and one billion euros should be repaid.

According to Bloomberg, Deutsche Post has said that it has already paid more than 350 million euros in relation to the case and it does not expect the ruling to have any further impact.
