Armenian government approves HayPost privatisation plans
The Armenian government has approved plans to privatise the national postal operator, HayPost CJSC. According to local sources, the government yesterday (27 May) approved a bill which called for the privatisation of a number of state entities, which included HayPost.
HayPost is wholly owned by the Armenian state, and reports to the Ministry of Transport and Communications. However, in 2006 the government agreed to hand over the management of the postal operator to HayPost Trust Management BV, a private Netherlands company owned by Argentinean-Armenian businessman, Eduardo Eurnekian.
According to the Armenpress news agency, Arman Sahakyan, chief of the State Property Management Department, said that the postal operator would be of considerable interest to investors – and the privatisation would “increase financial flows”.
“With the help of investments we expect to modernize physical infrastructures, to restore around 250 post offices, to purchase mobile post vehicles, which will serve all Armenian communities including those 250 communities where there are no post offices at the moment,” Sahakyan was quoted as saying. “Transportation means will also be renovated, post-boxes will be places at all 750,000 registered addresses of Armenia.”
HayPost currently operates about 900 postal offices in Armenia, providing postal, payment and retail services.
