UPS reaches 5-year labor deal with airline workers
United Parcel Service Inc UPS.N , the world’s No. 1 package carrier, said on Tuesday it had reached a five-year contract deal with unionized mechanics and other workers at its in-house airline.
Most terms of the deal with the Teamsters labor union covering 1,140 aircraft mechanics, flight simulator technicians, utility workers and maintenance controllers working at UPS Airlines were not immediately available.
The tentative contract calls for “industry-leading wages”, runs to Nov. 1, 2006, and is retroactive to August, UPS said in a news release.
“The agreement means we can continue to focus on growing our business while enhancing good-paying UPS jobs,” said UPS Vice President Bob Lekites.
On Aug. 29, drivers, package handlers and other Teamsters workers at UPS voted by a 72-28 percent margin to ratify a separate deal calling for a 22 percent rise in wages over six years for 210,000 UPS staff in the United States.
